WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?

Hull & East Yorkshire's only registered charity for dyslexia.

What is Dyslexia?

A specific learning difficulty that primarily affects the ability to learn to read and spell.

  • Dyslexia primarily affects the ability to read fluently and spell confidently, but it can affect people in different ways and at different stages of their life.
  • Dyslexic people are often resourceful and determined, meaning they find ways to overcome the challenges they face, but some need more support with this than others.
  • Dyslexia involves difficulties with dealing with the sounds of words, which can make it especially hard to learn to use phonics to read words.
  • Dyslexic individuals often have challenges with short-term and working memory, which can make it hard to retain information, follow instructions, and to do things like mental arithmetic.
