Sam’s journey through the fire service is a powerful example of how dyslexia can be supported and even become a strength in the right career.

For many people with dyslexia, traditional education can feel like an uphill struggle. Classroom-based learning, heavy emphasis on written work, and rigid teaching styles don’t always allow strengths to shine. But the fire service tells a very different story, one where practical skills, creative thinking, and problem-solving are not just valued, but essential.

Sam’s Journey into the Fire Service

Sam is now 40 years old and has spent 14 years in the fire service, with the last four years working in stations. He currently serves as a Crew Manager, responding to incidents and leading teams in high-pressure, fast-moving environments.

At school, Sam had little interest in learning. He describes the classroom environment as “a mismatch” for how he learns.

I don’t respond well to structured learning

he explains. This led to a loss of confidence and a negative self-image. Sam was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 14, but it wasn’t until later in life that he truly felt supported. That support came through the fire service.

Throughout his career, the fire service has recognised Sam’s dyslexia, supported his diagnosis, and encouraged his progression. Rather than seeing dyslexia as a barrier, they focused on his strengths and helped him develop in ways that worked for him.

Why the Fire Service Works So Well

The fire service offers excellent career progression and a wide variety of roles. Sam has worked as an on-call firefighter, in specialist stations, and now in a leadership role as a Crew Manager.

Training within the service is highly practical and flexible. Learning is hands-on, supported by e-learning that can be completed at your own pace. Teaching is often delivered one-to-one online and adapted to suit individual learning styles. This approach allows people with dyslexia to learn in ways that play to their strengths, rather than forcing them into a one-size-fits-all model.

Dyslexia as a Strength on the Job

Sam faced some initial challenges, particularly with radio communications and messaging but believes his dyslexia has enhanced his performance at work. He credits it with giving him strong problem-solving skills, excellent practical ability, and the confidence to approach situations creatively. In an emergency service where thinking differently, staying calm under pressure, and adapting quickly can save lives, these skills are invaluable. As Sam puts it:

I don’t think inside the box, and never have done.

Joining the Fire Service

One of the most appealing aspects of the fire service is its accessible recruitment process. Unlike many careers, there are no formal qualifications required to apply. Instead, applicants need to attend an in-person Recruitment Awareness Day, complete an online assessment including English and Maths, followed by a physical assessment and fitness tests. Successful candidates then progress to an interview. Their focus in on teamwork, communication, and adaptability. For individuals who may not have thrived in traditional education, this approach can be life-changing.
