When Reuben came to Dyslexia Sparks, he wasn’t just struggling with literacy. He had stopped learning altogether.
At just 10 years old, school had already taken a serious toll. It didn’t feel safe. Anxiety had built over time, his confidence had collapsed, and eventually, learning became overwhelming.
His family made the difficult decision to remove him from mainstream education and begin home educating.
By the time he joined us in October 2025, Reuben had completely shut down to learning. Reading, writing and even holding a pencil were all triggers. His self-esteem was at its lowest, and communication with his tutor was a struggle.
Fast forward 6 months, Reuben’s journey and transformation has been remarkable. His mum Jo said:
”I’m just blown away how much he’s learning in such a short period of time.
How We Changed Reuben’s Journey
Through calm, structured sessions, and a consistent routine, Reuben began to feel safe with his specialist tutor at Dyslexia Sparks. Knowing what to expect each week helped reduce his anxiety, while our hands-on, multi-sensory approach allowed him to engage in ways that worked for him.
Small wins became the foundation for bigger ones. Each success, no matter how small, helped rebuild his confidence and showed him that learning didn’t have to feel overwhelming.
In six months his hard work and dedication have made his progress almost “unrecognisable.” His phonics, spelling and overall confidence in literacy have skyrocketed. He’s now retaining information more easily, recalling facts with speed, and approaching learning with a new sense of independence.
His commitment has extended beyond the classroom too. Regular practice at home has strengthened his memory and helped embed new skills, giving him the tools to become a more confident, capable learner.
His tutor, Helen, reflected: “It is a delight to reflect on Reuben’s incredible journey, and the amazing changes in him in such a relatively short time.”
The Right Learning Environment Changed Everything
For Reuben, a traditional classroom environment which is often busy, loud, and unpredictable made learning incredibly difficult, particularly alongside his sensory processing challenges.
In contrast, a calm, structured, and supportive setting has allowed him to flourish. At Dyslexia Sparks, he isn’t separated or made to feel different. He’s understood, supported, and celebrated for who he is.
Reuben now comes into lessons happy and confident. He’s built friendships, looks forward to his session each week, and feels part of his “Sparks family.”
His mum Jo shared that he’s writing more and taking pride in his work. That self-belief is what was missing.
And it’s what unlocks everything else.
”He’s actually reading and asking to go to the library. There’s a spark there now. He’s started to believe in himself.
Change doesn’t have to take years, sometimes it can happen in just a few months.
