Specialist Dyslexia Teachers: Meet the Team at Sparks

At Dyslexia Sparks, we believe that every learner deserves to feel seen, understood, and empowered. That’s why at the heart of everything we do is a team of passionate, highly trained, and dedicated specialist dyslexia teachers. We have years of experience, specialist qualifications, and a deep understanding of how to unlock the unique strengths of every dyslexic learner with personalised learning.

These are the champions helping children and adults rediscover their confidence, embrace their potential, and spark a lifelong love of learning.

Meet Specialist Teacher Sam

Sam has been with the charity from its beginning and now leads the specialist teaching team. As a dyslexic individual, she has a unique perspective – not just on how some of our students learn, but more importantly, on how they feel. Recently completing a Master’s in Educational Professional Practice in Dyslexia and Literacy, Sam continues to champion inclusive education – making her a true force to be reckoned with.

Why Sam loves to teach: “Teaching is not just about passing tests – it’s about empowering our students to achieve their goals, whatever they may be. That means teaching in ways that work for them, at a pace that suits them, with strategies that support where they are right now.”

What a student said: “Sam seemed to just understand my mind and helped me figure things out in a way I’ve never thought of before.”

Meet Specialist Teacher Amy

Amy brings 20 years of experience in education, including her role as a SENCO lead. The past 7 years have been spent at Sparks as a specialist dyslexia tutor and assessor. Her kindness shines through in everything she does, always going the extra mile to help. As the charity’s assistive technology lead, she ensures the latest advancements are accessible to the team and for all our students.

Why Amy loves to teach: “Teaching allows you to inspire curious, lifelong learners, and witness students’ growth as they gain confidence and master new skills.”

What a parent says: “What Amy has done for Daisy is just incredible and we cannot put into words how grateful we are as a family. I’m seeing my little girl with dreams and goals and experiencing success at school.”

Meet Specialist Teacher Laura

Laura joined Team Sparks just as the pandemic hit, stepping confidently into her lessons with a warm approach. With over 20 years of experience – including roles as a nursery manager, SENDCo, and speech and language specialist – she brings a deep passion for inclusive education. Her positivity, resilience and standout teaching continues to impress parents and support students every step of the way – she gets results!

Why Laura loves to teach: “Many students arrive at Sparks with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in their abilities. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness their transformation as they develop learning strategies, begin to believe in themselves, and realise they are capable of achieving so much more than they thought possible.”

What a parent says: “Thank you so much for all the support that Tristan has had. It makes me feel less alone in what feels like a never-ending battle to ensure he has the support he needs.”

Meet Specialist Teacher Lauren

Lauren joined Sparks in 2024, bringing her energetic and bubbly approach for supporting dyslexic learners. With years of experience in special educational needs and a Level 5 qualification in Specialist Dyslexia Teaching, she uses her knowledge and fun approach to her lessons. Lauren fully embraces the Sparks’ values of compassion, care, and professionalism, and always has a smile on her face!

Why Lauren loves to teach: “Teaching at Sparks is an absolute breath of fresh air. The smaller scale allows me to tailor the learning to each student and really hone in on their individual needs. I feel very lucky to be able to witness their growth, not only academically, but also in areas such as confidence and self-awareness.”

What a parent says: “Nathaniel comes out of your classes positively buzzing! He’s thoroughly enjoying his sessions, and I can see he’s thriving with the individual attention.”

Meet Specialist Teacher Helen

Helen joined Sparks having built up extensive experience within the education system. Her most recent role was as Deputy Head at a local school. Helen brings passion and fun to all her lessons, as well as a hard-working nature. She is a fantastic advocate for dyslexic learners, and has taken on the role of lead for the Sparks Ambassador project.

Why Helen loves to teach: “The approach to learning at Sparks is powerfully engaging, with every student discovering things for themselves in lessons, rather than just being instructed. I get the opportunity to teach in a truly personalised way, with time to see what each student needs to build upon.”

What a parent says: “Helen has been fantastic with Jake from day 1 and adapts his sessions to suit his personality and interests. She provides us with regular updates and is as invested in his progress as much as we are.”

Meet Our Founding Director Jane

Jane is dedicated to guiding the charity towards its shared vision of empowering dyslexic individuals to overcome challenges and make meaningful contributions to the world around them. With a background in psychology and extensive experience in education, including her role as a lecturer at the University of Hull and as a specialist dyslexia teacher, Jane is passionate about helping people to develop – in all walks of life. In addition to her broad teaching experience, she also provides dyslexia assessments, specialist training, and workplace support to schools and organisations.

Why Jane loves to teach: “Specialist teaching allows me to make real connections with learners and find out exactly what they need to thrive – seeing them grow their skills and confidence is incredibly rewarding and something I feel lucky to be part of every day.”

What a parent says: “Jake absolutely loves his lessons at Dyslexia Sparks. It’s the only homework he’ll do without complaining! He never puts up a fight to go to his lessons with Jane because he enjoys them so much. Dyslexia Sparks look at the whole picture and support with all elements.”

Unlike fast-paced school settings, learners at Sparks go at their own pace – revisiting challenges, fully processing information, and building the confidence to be independent learners.

Because our sessions focus on individual pace and learning progress we can be flexible and respond to particular needs. So if a student needs to spend longer revisiting a certain aspect, we continue to do this in various ways, until they feel secure to progress.
