At Dyslexia Sparks, we’re always looking for innovative ways to support children and young people with dyslexia. Chatta’s practical, confidence-building strategies have proven to be a powerful addition to our toolkit.
Last summer, our teaching team took part in training with Chatta Learning, an inclusive teaching approach designed to remove learning barriers, unlock writing potential, and boost confidence in vocabulary.
Chatta describes its approach as Inclusive. Simple. Transformative. After seven months of using the communication software across our sessions, we can confidently say we’ve seen a significant difference in our students. Amy, our Assistive Tech Lead, shared:
”As a specialist teacher, I recognise Chatta as a highly effective, inclusive whole-class teaching approach that significantly enhances communication, language, and literacy outcomes across a wide age range.
How Chatta Works
Students upload images to Chatta, then record descriptions, share ideas, and talk with peers and tutors to build vocabulary. They can then write about these topics, allowing their ideas and language to develop more naturally.
For dyslexic and neurodiverse learners, who are often more visually led, this approach is particularly effective. By linking images with spoken language, students are better able to process, retain, and recall information. The method also supports valuable overlearning, helping to support to memory and processing speed.
Students naturally grow in confidence when speaking. As they talk through their ideas, they develop stronger communication skills and begin to absorb sentence structures and vocabulary more easily, helping these become more automatic over time. This foundation then leads to improved writing outcomes, as students are no longer trying to process information while writing.
Students can work on topics that matter to them – whether that’s a current school topic like the Titanic, an upcoming holiday, or even targeted literacy tasks such as identifying suffixes. Some of our Year 10 students have used the approach for revision and chunking information. This sense of ownership increases engagement and willingness to try new approaches.
How Our Students Have Benefited
One of the biggest things we noticed is how naturally students took to Chatta across all abilities and age groups. There’s very little barrier to new users, which is key for learners who may already feel hesitant or anxious about literacy tasks or education in general.
With Chatta, understanding deepens, and writing becomes far less intimidating. This is especially powerful in creating a safe, confidence-boosting environment which Dyslexia Sparks has always tried to create in tuition.
Chatta supports writing development in a way that feels accessible, engaging, and designed to meet diverse learning needs. We’ve used Chatta activities to boost confidence, develop vocabulary and strengthen questioning and comprehension skills.
The results have been consistently positive: increased engagement, improved confidence, and a noticeable shift in how students approach both speaking and writing tasks.
Chris Williams from Chatta shared his thoughts on working with our team:
”I’ve been inspired working with the specialist teachers at Dyslexia Sparks and seeing the difference they make for their students. Chatta works because it supports the thinking process itself — sequencing, processing, and working memory. When that’s in place, everything else follows. So glad Chatta is part of their valuable work.
Who Can Access Chatta?
Chatta is mainly designed for students in education settings, however students can be provided individual logins so they can continue their learning at home, with access to a more limited set of features.
Looking Ahead
At Dyslexia Sparks, we’re excited about the continued impact Chatta will have on our students. Its ability to support literacy development, reduce learning barriers, and build confidence aligns perfectly with our mission to provide inclusive, empowering education.
