At Dyslexia Sparks, we know that having your child assessed for dyslexia can feel like a big step. Whether the assessment has confirmed dyslexia, highlighted specific learning differences, or ruled it out, you may be wondering what happens next

Here’s some guidance to help you move forward with clarity and confidence after a dyslexia assessment.

1. Take Time to Understand the Feedback

After a dyslexia assessment, you’ll receive verbal feedback or a detailed report outlining your child’s strengths, challenges, and recommendations. The report document can feel overwhelming at first, so give yourself time to read through it carefully and highlight key findings.

Make a note of terms or information you don’t fully understand – if you had your assessment with us, we’re more than happy to chat through everything.

Talk it though with your child, explaining the outcome so they understand. Keep it positive, focusing on strengths and how they can be supported going forward.

2. Share the Report with School

Where appropriate, provide the school with a copy of the report. Your child’s teachers and the school SENCO play a vital role in supporting their learning. You can discuss:

  • Specific recommendations for learning.
  • Reasonable adjustments in the classroom.
  • Extra time or adjustments in exams, including Form 8 applications and deadlines.
  • How progress will be monitored and reviewed.

3. Explore Specialist Tuition with Us

One of the best ways to support a child with dyslexia is through specialist tuition that’s tailored to their needs. At Sparks, our fully qualified dyslexia teachers understand the challenges children face and have experience supporting not only children with dyslexia but also those with other learning differences, such as ADHD and autism.

Our tuition is:

  • Personalised – Sessions are flexible and tailored to each child’s needs and abilities.
  • Structured and multisensory – designed to make learning engaging and effective.
  • Confidence-building – helping children to see their progress and believe in their abilities.

Many families tell us that this regular, focused literacy support makes a real difference, not only boosting academic progress but also building self-esteem and complementing school learning. We can also provide targeted help in the run-up to exams, giving children the tools and confidence they need to do their best.

4. Explore Support Options

Every child’s needs are different. Support might include:

  • Explore assistive technology (like text-to-speech tools, scanning pens, listening books).
  • Apply for an Educational Healthcare Plan (EHCP) where appropriate. This is mainly done through the school – it’s good to get them on board with the application. We previously held a webinar about the assessment process for EHCPs – watch it now.
  • Dyslexia Sparks offer support in filling out a Form 8 application – just get in touch.
  • Confidence-building hobbies and activities outside of school.
