Introducing Sparks Book Project: Free Books for Young Readers

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Sparks Book Project this March – an initiative designed to ignite a lifelong love of reading among dyslexic young people. At the heart of this project is our book vending machine, which will provide free books to those who need them most, making reading more accessible, engaging, and enjoyable.

Did you know – 1 in 10 children aged 5 to 18 did not have a book of their own at home... and this number is increasing.(1)

For many young people with dyslexia, reading can feel like an uphill battle. Sparks Book Project is here to change that narrative, offering books that inspire confidence and joy in reading. We believe that every child deserves the chance to discover the magic of books, and with this initiative, we aim to break down barriers and make literacy a truly inclusive experience.

With our mission in mind, we knew the best way to shape a library for dyslexic readers was to involve the experts – children themselves! Earlier this year, we partnered with Hull Libraries to host a creative session, inviting dyslexic and neurodiverse children to explore different books, authors, and storytelling styles. They flipped through pages, shared their thoughts, and helped us curate a selection that’s not just accessible but truly fun to read.

We’ve made our book selection more inclusive by incorporating a variety of accessible formats. Some books come with audio versions for enhanced storytelling, while Barrington Stoke has provided titles with larger, more spacious text for easier reading. We’ve also included books with engaging illustrations and fun typography to keep children immersed, along with comic books to showcase storytelling in a different, visual way.

This incredible project has been made possible thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. We extend our thanks to Becoming 360, our main sponsor, whose support has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. We are also deeply grateful for other contributions which have helped fund the books that will be distributed through our vending machine.

If you or your organisation would like to get involved in the project, either by donating books or becoming a sponsor, please contact our team.

Together, let’s spark a love for reading that will last a lifetime!
